  32.         MUNI (Municiple Railway) crisscrosses San Francisco completely.
  33. Its Underground rail and buses service an area of about 700 square miles.
  34. Bus Fares recently raised to $1.00 (up from 1993's 85 cents) and cable
  35. cars cost $2.50 (up from 1993's $2). A transit passport is $8 for one day,
  36. $15 for three consecutive days for visitors, and $50 for a full month.

  38.         MUNI's streetcars were replaced by the MUNI metro which runs
  39. alongside and under BART* in the downtown area.

  41.         The cablecars, which began service in 1873, are the last such
  42. still in service in the world. They have no engines and are operated
  43. by a gripman and a conductor, capacity of about 100 people, at whopping
  44. 9 1/2 mph.  There are three lines in all, the scenic Powell-Hyde, which
  45. follows a vertical and lateral zigzag course from the corner of powell 
  46. and Market streets over both Nob hill and Russian Hill to a turntable at
  47. gaslit Victorian Square in front of Aquatic par near the Maritime museum.

  49.          The Powell-Manson line starts at the same intersection and
  50. climbs over Nob Hill before descending to Bay Street just three blocks
  51. from Fisherman's Wharf.

  53.     The California Street line begins at the foot of Market Street, cuts
  54. through Chinatown, crests Nob Hill, and continues to Van Ness Avenue.

  56.          Taxis are usually called, not hailed, and charge $3.50 for
  57. the first mile and $2 for each additional mile. Companies include:
  58. Vetran's Cab, Desoto Cab, Luxor Cabs, Yellow Cab, Pacific Cab and
  59. Allied Taxi, along with a number of independents.

  63.      Bart is an acronym for the ~Bay Area Rapid Transit~ System, a
  64. high speed rapid-transit rail network that connects San Francisco
  65. with Oakland, Richmond, Concord, Daly City and Fremont, a Distance 
  66. of about 71 miles.

  68.      BART's cars are 70 feet long and designed to represent the
  69. lats word in public transport luxery; with carpeted floors, tinted
  70. picture windows, automatic air conditioning and recessed lighting.
  71. They average 42 mph and have a top speed of 80 mph. A computerized
  72. cotrol system monitors and adjusts train speed and maintains safe
  73. spaceing.

  75.    The part of the Route between San Francisco and Oakland runs 
  76. through the longest underwater transit tube in the world, which
  77. opened in Sept 1974, six months after the then general manager
  78. resigned under fire and two years after it was supposed to have 
  79. opened.

  81.   Ordinary Fares run from $1 (up from 1993's 85 cents) to $5 
  82. depending on the distance and time. Children under 4 ride free.
  83. BART trains run from 6 am to midnight Mon to Sat and from 9am 
  84. to midnight on Sunday.
